EFFECTIVENESS OF MOTION GRAPHICS IN ADVERTISING: A Qualitative Study of Visual Communication, Brand Engagement, and Consumer Response

Abstract

Motion graphics use animation and graphic design to bring together visuals, text, colour and sound to create animated digital content. As viewers have increasingly gravitated towards media that features moving images over the past decade, brands have responded in kind by trading static ad impressions for dynamic, narratively rich visual experiences that can convey large amounts of marketing information in a matter of seconds. This literature review explores how motion graphics became an integral part of modern advertising; why they function as a powerful medium for getting consumers’ attention and helping them retain information; and what commercial, promotional, and persuasive roles they serve.
Secondary sources were collected from 30 academic journal articles, master’s dissertations and doctoral theses, literature reviews, and industry whitepapers published between 2018 and 2026. Data were coded and analysed qualitatively with a thematic analysis approach. Results show motion graphics excel at capturing users’ attention and increasing viewer retention for communicative content due to their emotional, audible and kinetic augmentation of static visual mediums. Relative to filmed advertisements featuring human actors or recorded footage, motion graphics are also less expensive to produce on a small scale and easy to recreate once a brand’s visual identity has been established in animation format. Motion graphics aid in the sales process by breaking down complicated offers into simple videos, communicating unique brand selling points, and driving measurable sales events; however, they have been shown to play a relatively weak role in establishing brand loyalty with consumers over time. While motion graphics are still widely discussed as a passing design trend rather than a fundamental communication technique, this paper argues they are closely intertwined with the future of advertising and visual communication.
